Straight From The Fosters Mouth!

I rescued a little orange tabby from my local high-kill shelter because he was going to be euthanized for two reasons:

1. There was not enough room in the shelter to keep sick & nervous animals

2. The staff there thought he was too hard to give the kitten the necessary meds to help him

I was told by my friend, and Toronto Cat Rescue foster mom Shelley, to get to the shelter ASAP and rescue the kitten for her! I headed out the very next day to save this precious little man who was so so scared. Apparantly he was surrendered to the shelter because his owner had "too many cats in the house". SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS PEOPLE!!

On my way from the shelter to the vet clinic, the little tabby hid at the very back of the crate and looked at me with the most pitiful and soulful eyes. From that moment, I named him "Antonio" because he looked just like Antonio Banderas' character from "Puss and Boots".

Antonio got a clean bill of health and within 24 hours I received this message from his foster mom Shelley":

At first it was forced cuddling until he started to purr last night. Then it was more forced cuddling, but he was more willing. Then, I carried him downstairs, sat in a comfy chair and held him, rubbing his neck and face. Purring started, his body relaxed and then I realized that his tail was out. You know how they pull their tails up between their legs when they are scared? Last night he would barely look at me, and today we did a little gazing into each other's eyes (the ultimate sign of trust). Then slowly, slowly he "opened up', let me rub his belly, and next thing he was on his back legs up, arms down like a human baby, tail out and purring like a tractor. Then, we were both asleep. Best feeling ever, for both of us. Taking care of these little lives is the BEST and most honourable thing I have ever done.

A job very well done Shelley! Another life saved from certain death and within a week he will be put up for adoption on Toronto Cat Rescue's website!!

My First Rescue of 2012!

Tomorrow morning I can head out to my local high-kill shelter and save some very worthy kitties all thanks to Toronto Cat Rescue. It is absolutely freezing in Toronto right now so nothing makes me more happier than getting these innocent cats out of their cold cages and bringing them straight to their warm and loving foster homes!! Here are just a few lives that will be changed for the better tomorrow:

*Siblings that were surrendered by their owners*

It will be nice drive for me tomorrow because I won't be rushing after work (I am still on holidays) and can beat the highway traffic altogether! Should be a great rescue day all in all! I just can't get my mind off all the other animals that are living outside and don't have a place to call home. I guess I can't save them all.

My first rescue of 2012 will be a very special one for all of these furr-babies!

Disney's Chimpanzee Coming Soon!!

Disneynature’s film ‘African Cats’ helped the African Wildlife Foundation save over 50,000 acres of African savanna. Now, a new film will help save chimpanzees.

In a press release, Disneynature has announced that a portion of their first week box office sales from their film ‘CHIMPANZEE‘ will benefit the Jane Goodall Instiute (JGI) The nonprofit was founded by primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall and works to save great apes through research, public education and advocacy. The film, being released in theatres April 20, 2012, is going to help further that work. A portion of every ticket sale the week of April 20-26 will be donated to JGI through the Disney Widlife Conservation Fund.

‘CHIMPANZEE’ directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield followed a chimp named Oscar and his family in the forests of Africa. Walt Disney Studios President Alan Bergman said, “We are very excited to bring the story of Oscar and his chimpanzee family to the big screen. CHIMPANZEE showcases the incredible personalities and heartwarming relationships of these amazing animals…As part of our company’s ongoing efforts to protect the environment and empower audiences to participate in global conservation, Disneynature is proud to join with Jane Goodall Institute in its efforts to secure a future for chimpanzees in the Republic of Congo.”

Dr. Goodall, also a UN Messenger of Peace, is also excited about the partnership. “The Jane Goodall Institute is proud to work so closely with Disneynature on the release of CHIMPANZEE. JGI has been working in Africa for almost 35 years following on from my research begun in 1960. We are thrilled to extend our impact and efforts through this collaboration to support and celebrate such a wonderful film. Together, we can truly make a difference and are thrilled to have Disneynature join our efforts to protect chimpanzee habitats, care for orphaned chimpanzees in the Republic of Congo and educate a new generation of young people and connect them to nature.”

The movie may not be out until April, but Disneynature says you can get tickets for groups of 20 or more now by calling 1-888-DISNEY6.

Christmas Party Benefits Greek Dogs!

This years "Tails From Greece" Christmas Party was a great success raising close to $900 for the non-profit Canadian charity! Run by the incredible Dianne Aldan and her husband George, the part took place in the party room at the beautiful Esplanade building in Toronto. Some of the guests included foster moms & dads, volunteer drivers and supporters who love helping to get dogs and cats who live in dire situations in Greece (particularly Markopoulo, which is outside of Athens) and flown to Toronto where they are fostered until they find their furr-ever homes!!

Apart from all of the yummy food and socializing, attendees were treated to a guest speaker, veterinarian Dr. Sherebin, who spoke about holistic medicine and natural diets for our pets. The Secord Animal Hospital veterinarian was so informative and really brought a great discusiion to the group in regards to raw diets, major food companies and what we can do to keep our pets as happy and heathy as possible!

Upcoming fundraising events for Tails From Greece will include a wine tasting session at Cafe Nicole inside the Novotel Hotel in Toronto one Sunday afternoon in March. (Currently it is tentatively scheduled for March 25th, 2012) Also, Dianne would like to organize a hike within The Rouge to benefit the dogs. All money raised will help pay for veterinary bills and the costs associated with flying the dogs and cats over from Greece! 11 Cats Need Our Help!!

Hello my lovely readers!!!

I thought you might be able to help with this!! Death Row Dogs needs your help! A lady has approached us in a terrible situation. She took in a few stray cats off the street from the cold and they have multiplied. She had almost 20 cats but has found homes for some and is now down to 11!

We would like to fix them but the lady is on a very low income and cannot afford to pay for this. She was in tears speaking to my friend Charlie Winship and is very saddened that she has made things worse. We would like to help her and fix her cats.

The cost is going to be $600 and we need to raise the funds by Wednesday December 22nd! If $300 can be raised by this date, we will pay the rest! We need you to share this far and wide!! Please... dig a little deeper to stop the cats that this house is churning out! Just $10 a piece........please share or donate! Lets help these cats!

Pig-Nosed Turtles Return After 30 Years!

The 609 Pig-nosed Turtles confiscated in Hong Kong in January this year have finally been returned to Maro River in Papua. All the turtles survived the long journey from Hongkong through Jakarta, then on to Merauke and eventually Bupul village in Papua.

The local people in Bupul were delighted to meet the team from International Animal Rescue Indonesia (IAR Indonesia) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) who accompanied the turtles on their long journey. They held a special ceremony dedicated to the future wellbeing and survival of the turtles. Over-exploitation had driven the Pig-nosed Turtle to extinction in the river.

Mr Arnold, Head of Bupul village, said: "It's a real privilege to be able to see and touch these turtles again. They have been extinct in this area for more than 30 years. We really hope that future generations will enjoy seeing them inhabiting the river and will continue to cherish and protect them."

All the pupils from the local school in Bupul participated in the release. They were thrilled to be able to set the turtles free and swim with them in the river.

Karmele Llano Sanchez, Executive Director of IAR Indonesia, said: "The repatriation of the turtles has been a complete success. We send our thanks to the Hong Kong and Indonesian governments for their eagerness to cooperate which made it possible for us to save them. Our grateful thanks also go to Kadoori Farm and Botanical Gardens (KFBG) who have taken care of the turtles since January and paid the entire cost of their repatriation and release.

"People in developed countries who like to buy exotic pets such as turtles should think hard about the effect this trade has on wild populations that are in danger of becoming extinct. Millions of turtles are captured and transported to supply the growing exotic pet industry and vast numbers of them die before they even reach the pet shops. It is a tragic waste of wildlife."

What Is A Potcake!?!?

Ok so your asking yourself the same thing right? What the heck is a "potcake"?? NOOOOO its not something you ate when you were a teenager!!! It is actually the name an island dog of mixed breeding which derives its name from eating the cake (grits or rice) left in the bottom of the pot! Pretty cool huh!?!

Unfortuntely these little "potcakes" aka mutts run rampant on many, if not all, the islands of the Caribbean. Thankfully there is a wonderful organization on the island of Providenciales, Turks & Caicos, that is striving to help bring an end to the homeless dogs and cats that roam the streets.

My parents and I had the opportunity to visit Potcake Place (located inside a local vet clinic) and met the director Jane. The Potcake Place operates to rescue, foster and assist adoptions of potcakes for the Turks & Caicos Islands!! Jane was absolutely wonderful and introduced us to a few of their current foster pups, explained how they visit under privileged neighbours and try and help spay/neuter/release as many stray dogs as possible.

Since May 2006, Potcake Place has adopted 427 dogs in both the Turks & Caicos islands and North America. New Jersey came in first place with 41 adoptions while my Province Ontario came in second with 33 adoptions!! :) Jane also showed us their map which points out where in North America their local pups now live.

Spearing Lionfish In Turks!

Turks & Caicos (specifically Providenciales) is one of my favourite diving destinations! The ocean is unlike any other hue of blue I have ever seen before and the islands are surrounded with some of the most incredible marine life you can experience in the Caribbean! I was so fortunate to be able to go back to my fav island in August for one week and dive 3 out of my 7 days! Again, I dove with the amazing Provo Turtle Divers who are always so keen on making every guest feel important and very looked after.

Of course my dives were filled with sea turtles, eagle rays, colourful fish and for my first time ever SHARKS!! However, a very special treat for me was being able to see my divemaster spear the very invasive and reef destroying lionfish!

To be honest, I am the LAST person on earth who wants to see any creature being killed, however, I kept reminding myself that the lionfish do not belong in the Caribbean waters, they have no natural enemies AND are wrecking having on local reefs by eating all the little cleaners.

No Plastic Bags In Provo!

One thing I hate just as much as animal and child abusers is definitely plastic bags! I really feel that there is NO more need in this world for such senseless waste that is used so mindlessly by people every single day! This year I have made an effort to pack my re-usable bags with me while going on vacation so that I can not only reduce my need for plastic but also promote the use of this easy eco-friendly habit.

I loved shopping this past week on the beautiful island of Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos. I bought some really cute turtle necklaces from Dive Provo and a Potcake Place t-shirt benefitting an organization that helps the stray animals of TCI. It was so funny to hear my mom say "oh no plastic bags please, we are environmentalists and have our own bags"!!! You don't understand - ever 2 years ago my mom would have said to me "oh relax Nicole! Its only one bag relax!" so it just goes to show you that persistence and speaking up for what you believe in does work out!! (even for my stubborn mom lol)

If more and more people start to bring even one re-usable bag with them while on holiday it will really promote the practice to other vacationers and the local people. Think of how many plastic bags we can keep from blowing into the ocean and destroying our precious planet? If every one just took a couple extra minutes in their day to think "how can I make a difference?"

Hopefully in 2 MORE years there will be millions more converts just like my mom!! :)

A Thank You From Jamaica!

Animal-Kind International President Karen Menczer has started distributing the money I raised through my charity garage sale to the intended shelters and rescue groups around the world. I received a wonderful email this week from Deborah Binns telling me how she was going to spend the $150 USD I allocated for her amazing organization: Kingston Community Animal Welfare where Deb dedicates her days (and nights) to caring for stray animals, education the public, getting as many animals spayed & neutered as well as feed those who are dying of starvation.

Thank you so much for your generous donation thru AKI. I have 2 little mutts I took out of the bushes last week, in the dead of night, in heavy rain. They were, unsuccessfully, trying their best to shelter from the wind and rain. They bawled like banshees when I grabbed them but eventually they calmed down after rubbing their ears and giving kisses to the noses! J ( that never fails!) I will be using your contribution to feed, deworm and spay and neuter them. And, I already have a home identified for them but they will remain with me for a while longer cause they are so small.

Belizean Pup Finds True Love!

I just received this story and picture from my friend Amanda who lives in Belize and is a huge supporter/volunteer for the Caye Caulker Humane Society. (I donated the humane trap to her back in March) I thought this story was too cute and gave hope for other dogs around the world who are currently in need of being adopted. It just goes to show you that "stray" dogs on the streets in 3rd world countries CAN make amazing pets!!!

Maya (on the right) was adopted out to a Belgium couple who took him all the way home (from the Belizean Island Caye Caulker) at the very last minute with nothing organised! They keep in touch and often send pictures and updates for us. "Virus", their original dog, was known to be fussy about other animals around him (Virus was extremely spolied - they take them everywhere including sky diving, canoeing, hiking etc.) Well, it turns out "Virus" fell in love and this picture is of their nuptials in Belgium!!!!!

Hehehehe how cute is that!?!??! It looks like Maya may not be living the "island life" anymore, but I think we can all agree she is now being taken VERY well cared of and has found her soulmate!!! :)

Let It All Hang Out!!

The summer months are a perfect time to take advantage of what the sun has to offer! Not only is it helping our organic vegetable gardens to grow nice and big, it also gives us the opportunity to unplug the dryer for awhile and allow the sun to dry our clothes!

I purchased a great clothes line kit from the Canadian store Grassroots two years ago and I absolutely love it! I leave it hanging all year round and it is still in perfect condition, line does not sag and no rust has appeared after our harsh winters. I can't imagine how many tons of emissions I have saved from entering the atmosphere as well as money on our energy bill. For us Canadians, we have to remember we only have a few months a year that we can actually let our clothes hang to dry so why not start now!?!?!

First Transport A Success!

I have always wanted to help transfer a god from one side of the country to another and last weekend I received my first opportunity to do so! Little "Scamp" was being transferred all the way from South Carolina, USA to Ottawa, Ontario and I was able to help out during this 900 mile journey!

I picked Scamp up from a local hotel parking lot when he arrived from Kitchener, Ont. He was such a cute little thing who had been recouperting from a fractured front leg. I took him back to my house for some play time and relaxation before driving up to Toronto. This was the last leg of his journey before he boarded a rental van all the way up to Ottawa! Scamp will be fostered and put up for adoption with Minpinerie - a local Min Pin Rescue group in the Nation's Capital!

Plastic Bottle Schools In Guatemala!!

Thanks to the initiative and perseverance of Peace Corps Volunteer Trent Hodges, Las Mañanitas in Guatemala now has a new schoolhouse... made out of plastic bottles. Local students and residents were asked to stuff bits of discarded plastic into 12 ounce plastic soda bottles until they were firmly packed! 2,500 of these “ecobricks” were then used to fill in the concrete walls of the new school house. This technology neutralizes the plastic and gets local residents to start thinking of creative and constructive (get it?) ways to dispose of rubbage (rather than burning it in the mangroves). Garbage is an intractable problem in the "Hawaii Park" area of Guatemala, and affects not only the health of local residents and ecosystems, but is also an eyesore for tourists.

Many thanks to the following organizations who helped fund the school: Hug it Forward Foundation, Fundacion Primavera, the Mañanitas Beach Lounge, and the following hotels: Cafe del Sol, Hawaiian Paradise, Honolulu, Dulce y Salado, Casa Bella, La Haina, Utz Tzaba, Villa Kairos and Johnny’s Place.

"One Man's Junk Is Another Man's Treasure........."

Well that quote sure turned out to be true because my charity garage sale raised a whopping $485.50 for one of my favorite organizations: Animal-Kind International - and that's almost $200 MORE than I raised last summer!!! Even though it was a lot of organizing, cleaning and back breaking work I cannot even take half of the credit because without the donations from my amazing family and friends not even a penny would have been raised!!

A HUGE THANKS goes out to:

- My cousin Maria S. who donated an amazing Peg Perego stroller which brought in $50!

- My co-worker Sherry B. who donated a ton of BIG items including a couch ($50), futon ($20) and a lot of miscellaneous items which probably totaled an additional $50!!

- Lisa A. (an incredible animal activist) brought in $50 with an awesome elliptical machine and some cute Christmas items which my neighbor purchased!

- Kelly B. (my partner in crime re: animal welfare) donated so many great books, glassware and mugs!

- My wonderful neighbors Vern, Dale and Rachel donated a ton of kids books ($$$), two car seats ($18), an air pump ($15), motorized Disney car ($10) and lot of other outdoor toys ($$) :0)

- Last but definitely NOT least, the incredible duo Arlene and Charlotte (who are always sooooo supportive of my crazy charity initiatives!) brought over some awesome kid games, an ice-cream maker, Barbies and stuffed animals! WOO HOO!

I couldn't sign off without thanking Wesley, Sheena, Kristina, Serena, Michael & Chantelle and Pat who also donated some great items which helped me raise almost $500!

All of the money raised will be sent to various animal shelters and havens in 3rd world countries that are working tirelessly to improve the living conditions of dogs and cats that have no where else to turn. Also, because AKI has no overhead, 100% of my donation will go directly to helping the animals AND I can choose how the money is spent (ie: spay & neuters, de-worming meds, education, food etc)

Rob Stewart & Our Fight To Ban Shark Fins In Toronto!!

The graduating class at the high school I work at had the incredible opportunity to hear Rob Stewart speak at their "Grad Breakfast". Rob Stewart has become a leader and hero in the anti-shark finning movement all across the world with his incredible documentary Sharkwater! Millions of people from each corner of the earth have credited Rob with opening their eyes to the crisis our planet is currently in. Surprisingly, I did NOT have anything to do with scheduling Rob into my school - it was actually done entirely by the student council committee. Rob spoke to the 18 year olds about conservation, speaking up for yourself, the planet and most concerning - the state of our oceans. He was very inspiring and definitely got the message across to many teens who would have been more worried about their next text message or what they would be doing for the weekend!

It was fantastic being able to meet Rob in person - I was able to get both my Sharkwater DVD and coffee table book signed as well as some pictures with him! Rob will be in Toronto all summer working tirelessly on encouraging Toronto councillors to ban the sale of shark fins in our great city as well as edited his new up and coming conservation DVD tentatively titles Rise Up! It seems like the days are flying by so quickly and my charity garage sale benefiting Animal-Kind International is now just a couple days away! The donations are really coming in now and I have so many great things to sell. A huge THANK YOU to all of my wonderful friends, neighbours, co-workers and family members who have contributed. Last year I was able to raise $350 for AKI and I am really hoping for $500 this year. So far I have some great outdoor kid toys, a patio set, baby stroller (thanks Maria), amazing shoes (thanks Serena), great glass wear and very readable books (thank you Kelly!) My garage is already full and I have more arriving tomorrow :)

I actually have been telling myself "Nicole, you need to SELL these things NOT buy them for yourself! hahaha but there are some really great books I want to read. I guess I will just have to put them on hold at my library!

In between picking up donations after a hard day of pulling exams, I was able to have an ice cappuccino with an amazing woman last night! Her name is Kelly and apart from donating some great items and books for my garage sale she also does tons of volunteering for Toronto Cat Rescue, Forever Home Cat Rescue and Toronto Wildlife Centre. She does some amazing work and is always in her car picking up and delivering little furr-babies whether it be some sick kittens or an injured hawk!! It was great sitting down and having a conversation with someone who understands what we volunteers go through and some of the frustrations involved with rescuing animals. What should have been a quick coffee and hello turned into almost two hours at Tim Hortons!! I am not complaining though - I can't wait to do it again and be able to vent all of my frustrations to someone who understands!! hehe THANKS KELLY!!

I also rescued some gorgeous young adults from the high volume shelter yesterday right after work. Getting adults out during the summer is such a treat as there are sooooo many cute highly adoptable kittens that are there as well. All three girls were very sick unfortunately with an upper respiratory illness (cat cold) but I took them straight to the vet where they received antibiotics, fluids and were spayed today! Tonight they are resting comfortably in their foster homes and will be available for adoption in a couple of weeks through Toronto Cat Rescue!! THANKS TCR!!!

Great Rescue Day!

Wow after a very long day at the high school I work at (exams are in 2 weeks so you can imagine the chaos!) I drove out to the animal control I always rescue from and was able to save four precious angels that were slated for euthanasia this coming Friday. My wonderful friend, and dive buddy, Shelley agreed to take the three little monkeys who all came in separately as strays.

I was able to get out Scooby - a beautiful medium hair kitten who is just full of life and LOVES to be cuddled!!

Shelley also agreed to foster Lilac - a teeny tiny tortie baby who is just 6 weeks of age. I had the little angel up in the front seat with me as I drove back to Shelleys house. The poor little girl trembled all the way there. I am not sure if she was cold from the A/C blasting in my hybrid or if she was just terrified out of her mind? Either way, she is safe tonight and has a bright future ahead of her!!

Last but not least is Dexter who has turned out to be the naughty little kitten who things he's a great big Tom Cat!!! If you look at Dexter the wrong way he gets all hissy and thinks he's tough stuff! However, Dexter doesn't realize he is only like one pound and can fit in the palm of my hand hahaha so really he just needs Shelley's foster turned adopted cat Liam to put him in his place and show him who the real boos is!!!

Just hours before I was to head out to the shelter I received an exciting email from a Toronto Cat Rescue volunteer asking me to rescue a Siamese cross while I was at the shelter. It is always such a great feeling being able to get out an adult while the majority of rescue groups are saving kittens only during the summer months. Of course none of them deserve to die, but it's always a treat for me to save an older cat. "Becky" the Siamese is absolutely stunning to look at and even sweeter to be around! I can guarantee that she will be adopted in a flash as she is just adorable and simply wants to be loved! All of the kittens and "Becky" will be available for adoption after their two week quarantine through Toronto Cat Rescue

Hopefully it won't be long till I can rescue again!! The cages at the animal control were completely full. Of course as I was leaving with my four rescues a local resident was surrendering 2 adult cats and 2 kittens claiming they were "strays" - ugh it will never end will it?!?

Dogsinacage.com put up this billboard in Los Angeles this week to urge the power couple and their fans to stand up and do something about puppy mills. I am always telling my students the cruelty that takes place in these factory farms that are producing the millions of puppies and kittens that we see pouting at us from behind pet store windows. I can only hope that Dmei and Ashton will continue to speak up about this issue and hopefully bring as much attention to this issue as Oprah and Lisa Ling did back in 2008!!

Five minutes after this photo was taken, this puppy died. He never knew what it was like to live in a house or to be loved by a family. Rescued from a row of rabbit hutches, "Tommy" was one of seventy Bulldogs living outside in temperatures below 20 degrees. Upon arriving at our shelter, we noticed Tommy was lethargic and had difficulty breathing. Medical tests confirmed our worst fears - that Tommy had a serious heart defect, most likely inherited from his parents and caused by indiscriminate breeding. He was already in heart failure when the breeder gave him up. Every day shelters across the country receive complaints from consumers who purchase sick puppies over the Internet, or from pet stores, or directly from backyard breeders. The stories are always the same - "we didn't know it was a puppy mill," "we wanted to rescue the puppy because the place was so filthy," and "if we knew then what we know now, we would have been more careful." Tommy's brothers and sisters were sold over the Internet to unsuspecting families. We wonder to this day if any of them are acting lethargic or having trouble breathing, or are their families devastated by the death of a new pet.

Yummy Cupcakes Raise A Lot Of Dough!! (no pun intended haha)

In honour of Earth Day, the "Green Team" I run at the high school I work at and I held a bake sale to generate funds for various wildlife and conservation groups from around the world. There were tons of goodies including cinnamon buns, banana bread, a German chocolate cake, cookies and TONS of different cupcakes!! The sale was very successful and we were able to raise a whopping $103.00!!! After much consideration we decided to donate the funds to these wonderful charities:

SOS ELEPHANTS OF CHAD - $40.00

This donation helps a wonderful organization in Chad who have dedicated themselves to protecting the remaining elephants of the Central African nation. We know our donation will go towards the building of a new elephant orphanage and help educate the communities to realize how important these incredible animals are!!

THE GORILLA ORGANIZATION - $40.00

With this donation we were able to purchase a fire-wood saving stove for a family living around the Virunga National Park, DR Congo. These stoves use 75% less fuel than regular stoves and create a lot less smoke as well! We also made sure that we donated enough to have a tree planted to help rebuild the gorillas habitat.

AKAZUL GUATEMALA - $25.00

We used our remaining $25.00 to sponsor a nest through a the new Guatemalan grassroots group Akazul. Created and run by the incredible sea turtle power couple Scott Handy and Sarah Lucas, we knew our donation would be in great hands!!! Unfortunately 100% of sea turtle nests laid in Guatemala are poached and sold to markets in the large cities that is why it is so critical to buy back as many nests as possible and hopefully by the time those babies are ready to re-produce the consumption of turtle eggs will be a thing of the past!!

Earth Day Tree Hamilton 2011

Earth Day Hamilton 2011 was a huge success just as it has been every year! The muddy earth didn't keep the greenies away from planting trees, participating in activities and getting their hands dirty. Over 2000 trees were planted on April 23rd in Hamiton Ontario and the best part was that there were so many young families and students who showed up to help! I met up with some of my College besties whom I hadn't seen in months - it is always such a win/win reunion! We get to hang out, laugh like crazy while planting trees and helping the environment. I couldn't ask for a better day!!

Happy Earth Day everyone! I hope you take this day and reflect upon the things you have done to help our precious planet and its eco-system during this past year. Also, think of the various ways you can step up your game and make an even bigger difference for the rest of 2011 and 2012. Whether it be volunteering, buying local produce, taking less vacations or purchasing a hybrid car there are always new and inventive ways to make an even bigger difference then you already have been doing!

Today I will be celebrating Earth Day and Good Friday together with my family and enjoying a vegetarian meal together! :0)

Tomorrow I will be heading down to Hamilton Ontario to participate in their Earth Day Ontario Tree Planting ceremony which I have been attending for the past four years. Hamilton has come around full circle for environmentalists. A decade ago the city was only known for its Steel production and now we are seeing the return of the Bald Eagle for the first time in 50 years!!

Don't forget that Disney's African Cats debuts this weekend across theatres in North America. Money from each ticket sold during the opening will be donated to Save The Savannah. I Can't wait to see the documentary tomorrow night - reviews have been awesome so far!!!

Last but not least, if you are looking to purchase an Earth Day present for your best bud or significant other and don't have time to get out to the movies this weekend then I would definitely suggest Emily Hunter's new book "THE NEXT ECO WARRIORS". This incredible book written by one of the planets loudest and proudest warrior's features 20 young women and men who are dedicating their lives to protecting and saving our environment! I had the pleasure of meeting Emily for the second time at this years Green Living Show and was able to purchase the book directly from her which was such a treat!!

One of my best buddies, Melissa, celebrated her 27th (ahhhhhh) birthday this past Sunday and of course I wanted to get her a meaningful gift! *Delivering the cage to Amanda in Caye Caulker, Belize*

As many of you already know, whenever I travel abroad I try and help out the local animal welfare groups and humane societies that work tirelessly to prevent animal suffering in third world countries. Once I booked my March Break trip to Belize, I emailed the Caye Caulker Humane Society to find out if there was anything they desperately needed that could easily be found in Canada. The answer I received in their response was a request I wasn’t sure if I could help out with – they wanted a humane animal trap to catch homeless and abandoned cats that were wandering the island!!

UH OH!

I have brought vet meds to Uganda, collars and leashes to the Cayman Islands and office supplies to Mexico but NEVER something as unique and large as an animal trap!! Where the heck to start looking?? After some brainstorming I decided to email SWAT Wildlife from the Greater Toronto Area and see if they could sell me an old, rusty trap that was collecting dust in a corner. Rather than selling me one of their cages, SWAT blew me away with their incredible DONATION of an awesome humane animal trap at no cost at all!!

The Humane Society and I are so grateful for their support and selflessness which has now been shared throughout the island of Caye Caulker. In just one weekend, the donated cage from SWAT caught 8 cats who were taken directly to the islands vet for a check up, vaccines and then spayed/neutered. This trap will now save countless lives of unwanted litters that would have been born on the streets and live a life of uncertainty.

Amanda, from the humane society, emailed me and said "one kitten wondered in without it even baited, then we found the others nearby, must have smelt good!" (picture attached) A HUGE thank you to Derick and the SWAT Wildlife team for making such a difference for the animals – your generosity will never be forgotten!

What Did You Do For Earth Hour 2011???

Kristina and I attended her brother-in-laws surprise birthday party this past Saturday and had a blast! Of course when we saw the invite and realized the party was taking smack-dab in the middle of Earth Hour we freaked out a bit!!! Thankfully to the amazing party planner - my best friend & Kristina's sister Melissa, Earth Hour was incorporated in the party! The lights were shut off, candles were lit and the countdown began. Thankfully it didn't hinder the atmosphere at all - everyone had a great time and having all the electricity off just added a different edge to all of the conversations and dancing. The thing that surprised Kristina and I the most was how the adults got more involved in Earth Hour than any of the younger generation did. Melissa's dad and father-in-law were the ones who initiated the countdown and made sure all the electricity in the house was turned off! Kudos to Vince and Ken - THANK YOU!

Kristina and I have already discussed next years plans! By next April, Kristina and her boyfriend John will have moved into their first house so we already know where Earth Hour 2012 will be held!! PARTY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saying Goodbye Is Never Easy

*Rex at the Tails From Greece Walk-A-Thon!*

I met Rex a few years ago at a Tails From Greece walk-a-thon downtown Toronto. Tails From Greece is an amazing organization that works tirelessly to bring abandoned, abused and neglected animals from various shelters in Greece. Unfortunately the majority of animals in Greece are treated less than dirt and government funded poisonings, hangings and shootings happen on a daily basis around the country and throughout the islands.

Rex was found in Thessaloniki by some caring rescuers and unbelievably re-homed in Toronto. He was diagnosed with degenerative Myleopathy in Greece but this did not stop his mom Candice from adopting him and giving him a second chance at life. (She originally saw him on Petfinder!) Rex was born in 2011 and yesterday he went to the Rainbow Bridge. He'll be missed by everyone who came to know him very, very much. Candice made a beautiful tribute to Rex who many people came to know since his journey from Thessaloniki just short of 2 yrs ago (April 29, 2009). We are so sorry for your loss Candice and may you remember all the incredible memories you had with Rex and what an amazing life you were able to provide him with! You will always be his angel!

Earth Hour Tonight!!!

What will you be doing at 8:30pm tonight??? In the past years since it began I usually spend the event in my home with all lights, electronics and music turned off. With a few candles lit I cuddle with my dogs and usually talk with friends and family who are over at my house during that time. Tonight however will be different. My friend Melissa is hosting a surprise birthday party for her husband and his twin brother at their parents house. Kristina and I of course warned her that it would be taking place during Earth Hour and she has promised to incorporate it into the party! I am excited to see what she has planned for the time period that the world reflects and takes a stand against global warming!! HAVE FUN!!!

Too Many Lionfish To Count

It has been 48 hours since I retuned from Belize and I must say that I had a wonderful time! Between the amazing coral, puddle jumpers, bonding with a hawksbill and supporting a mini humane society, the trip couldn't have been better. Unfortunately however, this was my first vacation that I had a first hand account of the invasive lionfish that has been taking over the Caribbean for the last few years.

Although we can all agree that they are a stunning and unique looking fish - I can't help but think of how many native species they are taking over and destroying. While in Placencia, Belize - my divemaster Dereon explained that not only 3 weeks ago the town had a lionfish competition to see which dive shop could bring in the most lionfish. Hundreds of fish had been caught, weighed and eventually cooked by a famous chef from Belize City who came down to show the locals how to safely prepare and fillet the fish with poisonous spines! Apparently it tastes like chicken lol

Even though hundreds of lionfish were caught from the local reefs, Dereon informed me that not even a week later many more of these fish were spotted on the exact same reefs. Everyone has now realized that there will be no way to eradicate the lionfish completely but simply try and come up with new ideas to keep their numbers low - like competitions and introducing lionfish on local restaurant menus! Lets hope next time I visit Belize I will see ZERO lionfish! I only want to see them in the Pacific!! :0)

Paul just turned 9 years old, he is passionate, dedicated and an incredibly hopeful child. He wants to educate and inform all those who do not know Lolita's story. A Perfect Recipe For Pancake Tuesday!

Many of us around the world will be feasting on pancakes for dinner tomorrow in celebration of the Catholic celebration Lent. I love being able to give up something that I really enjoy whether it be chocolate, potatoes, gossip magazines or exercising. Ok ya, forget the last one I can't give that one up even though I would LOVE to!! Hahaha...........if you are planning a feast tomorrow why not whip up some super scrumptious, fluffy, vegan pancakes!!

Things You'll Need:

1 Cup White Flour (Whole Wheat will make denser pancakes)

1-2 Tablespoons Granulated Sugar

2 Tablespoons Baking Powder

1/8 Teaspoon Salt

1/4 Teaspoon Baking Soda

1 Cup SoyMilk

2 Tablespoons light Oil like corn or safflower

1 Teaspoon Lemon Juice

1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

2 medium mixing bowls

A spoon or ladle

Spatula

Hot griddle or pan

Instructions:

1. One mixing bowl combine all dry ingredients and stir well. In the other mixing bowl combine all wet ingredients and stir well.

2.
Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix with a spatula gently. Do not beat or overmix. The batter should be thick and lumpy, not thin and smooth.

3.
Let the batter sit while you heat up your griddle or pan. Using a non-stick pan non-stick griddle works well, but some people swear by cast iron pans or griddles. The batter should begin to rise and form bubbles. Do not stir the batter again.

4.
Using a spoon or ladle, scoop out about 2 Tablespoons of batter to make a small pancake, or about 1/8 Cup for a medium pancake onto the grill. Allow to cook until bubbles that rise to the surface do not close up, and when the surface turns from shiny to dull; flip the pancake and cook on the other side until lightly browned. A thin spatula works best for flipping pancakes. Stack pancakes on a paper towel until ready to serve. It is preferable to just serve your pancakes as you make them, because if you keep them in a heated oven as some people recommend, they won't end up fluffy. Vegan, yes. Fluffy, no.  
Serve with real CANADIAN Maple Syrup!!!!

All Might Not Be Lost In The Serengeti!

The African Regional Manager for the Frankfurt Zoological Society, Mr. Gerald Bigurube, confirmed that the German government will finance construction of tarmac roads that will link dozens of rural villages adjacent to the Serengeti National Park.

He also said that the World Bank and the German government are also ready to finance southern route that will link the Arusha region with the Lake Victoria regions without crossing the Serengeti. According to an interview with the Daily News, Mr. Bigurube said, "Linking rural villages in Serengeti and Loliondo districts with the their district headquarters is the best way of addressing economic needs of the communities living near the park."

The news article says Mr. Bigurube "disclosed that the German Federal Ministry for Development was ready to finance feasibility study of the rural roads in the districts if the idea will have blessings from the government of Tanzania." He said the "international community is also concerned with the needs of the people in an environmental friendly way but the road should not be close to the park because it will have serious impact that cannot be mitigated."

The next step is up to President Kikwete who recently turned down an offer from the World Bank to fund the alternate route.

All of the above information was provided by the incredible non-profit group: Serengeti Watch which has been building a strong coalition of support, advocacy, and funding for the Serengeti ecosystem, the people living around it, and the adjacent reserves and protected areas!

Last week I attended the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show and had the wonderful opportunity to speak with the Canadian Ambassador of Tanzania. I reiterated the concerns I and my fellow friends & conservationists have regarding the proposed highway through the Serengeti and encouraged him to relay this information back to his superiors. I also informed him that my family and I are planning a trip to Tanzania in July 2012 but the lack of concern the government is currently showing towards its ecosystem and wildlife is very upsetting to us and we just might change our travel plans and put our money elsewhere and choose another country to spend our money in. He was extremely polite, courteous and agreed with my concerns! Let's hope he does tell his government that their ill-advised plan is affecting not only the greatest migration on earth but also the tourists who spend millions of dollars to see it each year!!

New Washer & Dryer!

"I am sure we are going to save on our water and electricty bills because we are not using anywhere near as much water nor are we running the dryer for as long as we had to with the old and outdated appliances we had before. Before I used to have to run clothes for at least two cycles before they were completely dry but now forty minutes dries a heavy duty load!! I am so happy we purchased this new washer dryer set!"

- That's what my mom had to say the first weekend she used our brand new washer and dryer set. Sure, she's excited about cutting the time in half but I am secretly grinning thinking of how many pounds of carbon dioxide we will save from going into the atmosphere!! Not to mention, once the warm weather arrives in Southern Ontario we can start using the clothes line again and allow "Mr. Sun" to dry our skivvies!! hehehehe

We are not only helping the environment but our pocketbook as well! Its definitely a win win situation!

Michael Vick And The Real Story

Lately there has been a lot of Michael Vick in the news (last week he just cancelled his appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show). You remember him right? That loser who had it all going for him with the NFL career, major endorsements and millions of dollars going through his bank account each month? Well ya he pretty much took it all for granted and decided to open up his own dog fighting ring which operated under the name "Bad Newz Kennels".

I have been learning all about the operation, trial and crazy/horrific details in a terrific book I picked up from my library called "The Lost Dogs - Michael Vick's Dogs and their Tale of Rescue and Redemption". I am only half way through the book but I must say it is beautifully written and really goes into the details of how hard it was for the detectives and prosecutors to actually bring this story to light. I had no idea there would be so many government officials in Virgirnia who were on Vick's side and actually felt bad for the guy!

Thankfully we all know how the story turned out - Vick (and his loser dog killing friends) was charged, lost his contract with the Falcons,faced humiliation and did in fact go to jail for 21 months. Thankfully many of "The Vick Dogs" were in fact saved (not only from the life of fighting & death) but also dodged euthanasia with the help of some amazing rescue groups and very selfless/caring individuals. Michael Vick also paid close to 1 million dollars for the rescued pit bulls to go through intense rehabilitation and were given a second chance to live a second chance with loving families around The States. (120 of the Bad Newz Kennel dogs were not so lucky)

Update From AKI & The USPCA..........

There have been a lot of exciting things happening at my favourite (and the only) animal shelter in Uganda. An Animal-Kind International supporter designated his donation to the Uganda SPCA for community spay/neuter, the USPCA had the dogs at this orphanage in Entebbe (home to 40 children, babies to young adults) sterilized. Through this wonderful donation 4 males and 4 females were sterilized preventing countless unwanted litters, and USPCA still has funds left over from AKI's generous donor to spay and neuter additional pets of low or no income families. AKI donors can really make a difference for dogs and cats in poor countries, where there are so few people who are able to donate, and even when there are willing and able volunteers--as there are in all AKI partner organizations--funds severely limit what they can achieve.

During Karen's January 2011 trip to Uganda, she was able to see another way in which AKI donors have had a direct impact on the lives of animals in poor countries. The USPCA Haven's kennels needed repairs, and the AKI donations that Karen brought with her were put to use right away to get the kennels back into good condition. Also, as many of you know, an AKI donor's monthly contribution supports the salary of one of the Haven's caretakers, Mary (in the photo, wearing a pink dress) -because of Mary, each dog and cat gets personal care each and every day. (including one of my fav's "Hope"!)

How Can YOU Help The USPCA!?!?

USPCA's Requests For Their Dogs & Cats

1. The USPCA pays $33 to spay a dog or cat, and give a rabies vaccination. Your donation of $33 will spay one dog or cat and provide one rabies vaccination; your donation of $330 will spay ten dogs or cats and provide ten rabies vaccinations. We are targeting females since our funds are low and with one vet whose services are already spread thinly, we have to maximize our investment.

2. You can also donate funds for general veterinary care. For example, the USPCA would like to organize regular clinics in slum areas where any animal can get treated for diseases or injuries, and can be de- wormed and get a rabies vaccination. The cost of this general veterinary care would be about US$8 for each animal treated.

3. The USPCA is trying to convince people not to keep their dogs in small boxes, and for willing owners, is providing an alternative—a running line. For US $7 the USPCA can buy the material for and install a running line.

4. You can sponsor a USPCA kennel and provide support to feed the dogs at The Haven. Usually, a kennel holds about six dogs. Supporting one kennel for two months costs about $200. At your request, the USPCA will send pictures of the dogs that occupy your sponsored kennel space.

5. You can support the USPCA by donating rent for one month. The USPCA has to pay US $400 for rent of The Haven premises. Any donations are greatly appreciated, especially given the high cost of rent and the salaries the USPCA now has to pay to keep The Haven operating.

Please support the USPCA and Animal-Kind International in any way that you can. They truly are an incredible organization that runs with no overhead whatsoever. Every penny that you donate goes directly to the shelters in need and helps countless animals get a second chance at life!

Pretoma Wins Changemakers Online Competition! WOO HOO

Ashoka's Changemakers, with support from National Geographic and the Inter- American Development Bank (IADB), announced yesterday that PRETOMA's Development of economic partnerships between artisanal fisher folk and tourism operators entry was one of the three winners in the Places On The Edge- Saving Coastal And Freshwater Destinations Online competition. The project is developing environmental, economic, and social benefits in coastal communities located along the southwestern Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste through the application of sustainable fishing practices. "It's exciting to highlight these fisher folk as leaders in the field, working on innovative solutions that protect the environment and strengthen the heritage and livelihoods of their communities", said project designer Andy Bystrom, emphasizing that, "PRETOMA thanks all of the people who took the time to vote for the project; we are truly grateful for your support".

250 entries from 54 countries around the world participated in the competition. Among the 12 finalists was Costa Rica's Corcovado Foundation and its Building the Osa travelers' philanthropy fund entry. While not selected as a winner, the foundation's work to combine tourism with environmental conservation is an innovative initiative that also deserves recognition.

Footwear Manufacturer Arrested For Using Skins Of Endangered Animals

Ines Gomez Sanchez, 60, a Guatemalan man who has spent the last 15 years fabricating shoes in the town of Pastores, Sacatepéquez, near Antigua, Guatemala, was arrested for using skins of endangered species of animals.

Gomez’s arrest was solicited by the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) last week based on several complaints filed by residents regarding his fabrication and sale of footware using pelts of endangered animals. On arrival at Gomez’s shop, Botas G, investigators found one pair of boots made out of jaguar, 2 made out of boa constrictor, and one each made of crocodile and caiman. These boots can come to cost close to US$2,000. Gomez was retained under Guatemalan wildlife trafficking laws which stipulates a sentence of 10 years in jail. According to Kurt Duchez of CONAP, there are at least 10 other footware businesses in Guatemala that use skins of protected wildlife.

Lets hope this served as a wake up call for all those involved in the killing and trafficking of wild and endangered animals. To think of a precious, nearly extinct jaguar being murdered and mutilated for a stupid, useless pair of boots just makes my stomach sick. I really hope the Guatemalan authorities take this crime very very seriously and does all it can to keep this criminal in jail and send a strong message to everyone reiterating the importance of wildlife conservation!

A Big Cat And A HUGE Toothbrush!!

After watching Bella rolling around on the ground and along the fence for a good scratch, volunteer Nick decided that a stiff bristled broom might be just the job to help her with those ‘hard to reach’ spots. Nick has been working on carnivore enrichment alongside animal carer Gabi (pictured below), and the broom was definitely this week’s highlight. However Bella had other ideas on exactly how she should use her new toy – as a toothbrush! She played along for about an hour, growling and purring in satisfaction, with a little rest in between.

Disney's Earth 2011 Trailer Now Out!

Last year, viewers of Disney's Oceans had the opportunity to view a teaser trailer for the upcoming 2011 Earth Day release of the newest addition to their beautiful series and we knew immediately that it had to do with African cats! Well the full trailer has officially come out and the footage is stunning. The documentary will follow two big cat families as they live and grow in the African Savannah trying to survive as best they can. It will show the dangers, love and bonds these wild cats must endure while trying to live and protect & raise their young.

Quincey's Got A New Friend!

Introducing..............Mr. Lion!!!!! Quincey's newest and favourite buddy is his new eco-friendly and charitable dog toy made by Simply Fido which also benefits the Jane Goodall Institute. I didn't even know Jane had a pet collection through her "Good For All" brand which was created to recognize companies and environmentally conscious products that reflect Jane Goodall's core values. This collection of dog toys, which also features an adorable whale, are made from unprocessed cotton, hemp and coloured using an all natural process. I have purchased other toys made by Simply Fido which were certified organic but I do not believe this collection is and the only place I have been able to purchase them in Canada is at various Pet Valu locations. Even with all my searching and research I haven't been able to find out what percentage of profits will be donated to the Jane Goodall Institute for chimpanzee conservation and education so if anyone out there knows please let me know! :0)

The Christmas Kitten

I know Christmas is now over, however, I just found this poem on Florida's Rescuing Animals In Need website:

I once was a cuddly kitten, but now I am a stray,

'Cos when I was no longer fluffy, they sent me on my way.

They've kept the big Alsatian, as he can bark and growl,

But I could fly at strangers, if I caught them on the prowl.

I slink around their dustbin; I mew outside their door;

But it's clear from their behavior they don't want me anymore.

Now I'm cold and hungry, and getting very thin,

What have I done to hurt them, why won't they let me in?

I crouch in sheds and boxes, in my bedraggled fur,

So shivery and dejected, I cannot even purr.

They have another kitten now, their children's whole delight;

But probably by next Christmas, it will share my wretched plight.

"Rescuing Animals In Need promotes responsible pet ownership. Part of that is realizing a kitten will all too soon be a cat. We have heard many children ask their parents for a kitten, only to hear the parent say 'you have a cat already' to which the child responds 'but I want a KITTEN, Miss Kitty isn't a kitten any more.' We find strays all the time that come right up to people to be held and petted. These are not feral cats, but one time pets that have been abandoned. The fate of most of these abandoned pets is DEATH. Picked up by animal control, hit by cars, killed by other animals or people. This also happens with puppies that become dogs."

Thank you to all the animal rescue groups from around the world that continue to remind us all that no matter how big or old your cute little puppy or kitten becomes you are always responsible for the love, care and attention they wholeheartedly deserve!

Christmas Comes For A Second Time!!

When I got home from work today there was a large parcel waiting for me!!! YAY who doesn't like unexpected gifts right?? Well turns out my parents ordered some things for me back in November that didn't make it under the Christmas tree in time! :0(

In the parcel were items from Florida's Save The Manatee Club. I have been a supporter of their's for a long time. I have an adopted manatee named Whiskers in my scrapbook and have adopted various manatees for my cousins as well. STMC is a fantastic non-profit group that has been promoting manatee conservation efforts within Florida and have recently been sponsoring research and rescue/rehabilitation efforts in various countries such as Belize and Senegal. (See my post from last year HERE)

Inside the little box from the US was a manatee toothbrush and soap holder, Christmas book, wine stopper and a bonus bag!

The fun didn't stop there!!! HAHAHA turns out in the mailbox was an envelope from the U.K. Now this I knew was coming! One of the items on my list this year was an adopted orangutan through Care For The Wild International in support of the Orangutan Foundation. For only 25 pounds, the adoption pakcage included lots of education reading material, a sticker for the car window, a plush orangutan, Christmas card, a donation box and of course the adoption certificate who turned out to be a baby named Wenda from Sumatra. Thankfully since Wenda's rescue in 2009 (from a small cage in someone's garage) she is flourishing in a rehabilitation center and will hopefully be released into the wild and help her critically endangered friends fight back from extinction!

New York (& Kristina!) I LOVE YOU!!

My best bud Kristina just got back from a fun-filled weekend in NYC. It was her first time to the Big Apple and being a huge greenie like me I knew she would take advantage of walking the streets and taking in all of the sights via public transportation. Although not the most eco-friendly thing she has done recently, Kristina shopped till she dropped. While browsing through Forever 21, Krissy came across various items that had been designed and created with charity in mind. There were two shirts in particular that caught Kristina's eye and she knew she just had to get them for the two of us! Being huge animal adoption advocates, these shirts were just perfect for us! Krissy purchased the "I'm A Lover, Not A Fighter" shirt for herself. As you can see above the picture is just priceless. Unfortunately in Ontario Canada, Pit Bulls have been banned from being bred & adopted so this shirt is extra meaningful in our Province. She also picked up the ultra-cute kitty shirt for myself!! A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Humane Society of the United States which is the nation's largest animal protection organization. Not only do they rescue abused and abandoned animals in need of help, but the HSUS also supports animal sanctuaries, marine wildlife protection and humane education (just to name a few). Not only do we look great with our shirts but we also feel great wearing them too!!!

Surrounded By Love..........

It never ceases to amaze me the incredible people that I am constantly surrounded by on a daily basis. This morning I received a voicemail from one of my closest friends Shelley and she informed me that she found a baby hawk that fell from its nest. She was very worried as its beak looked broken and the "mom" was flying around the houses going crazy. She didn't know what to do and was looking for advice. Unfortunately I was sick in bed all day with the flu and didn't get her message until this evening. When I went to message her on facebook this was what was waiting for me in my inbox:

"All is well. I took the wee bird to the Wildlife Centre. It was a pigeon - I was not saving its baby, I was stealing its dinner. For 5 seconds I felt like a fool. Then I said to the girl, a life is a life. She said, we love pigeons here, go down that hall. And there, through one way glass I saw, pigeons!, lots of recovering pigeons. Those of us, who understand this, understand this. I left them with $50; in thanks. She said to me, If you had brought us a mouse, or a rat, we would have taken it. Nicole, what wonderful work we do. I could not have picked up that bird today. I could not have coped, if it had not been for our kittens and you support and reassurance. Please cut and paste this into your blog. This is the most satisfying work I have ever done. Feel better, wonderful girl. Lots of love Shelley" *

Most people I know would probably laugh at this story, but for me and so many others out there, these are the stories that keep us going. Knowing that if and when we find an animal in need (no matter how big or small) there will be individuals on the other end, like the staff and volunteers at the Toronto Wildlife Centre, that will greet us with open arms!

Merry Christmas - 2010!!

Merry Christmas everyone!! No matter what you may be doing today whether its having a big dinner with your family, friends or with your furrbabies I wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Some eco-friendly tips for the day include:

1. Re-use all gift bags, tissue paper and tags - put them all in one big bag or box and save them for 2011!!

2. Turn down the heat if you are having a lot of people over - between body heat and flowing alcohol no one will notice that the furnace is not on

3. Keep all chocolates up and away from the reach of pets - remember chocolate is toxic to dogs

4. Don't like a gift you received? Either donate it to a local womens shelter or save it for another occasion to re-gift!! Shhhhh I won't tell!! Less waste for the planet and a heavier wallet for you!

Load Up On Fruit & Veggies Minus The Plastic!!

My family and I have been using Credo Bags for almost two years now and we absolutely LOVE them! We love fruits and veggies in our house but it was always so frustrating for my dad and I to make those heart healthy choices while having no option other than use those petroleum based mini produce bags to package it all in! Thankfully two years ago my best friend Kristina and I came across Credo Bags at The Green Living Show in Toronto. We immediately picked some up for ourselves and family to give away as gifts. The re-usable produce bags are extremely lightweight, made from organic cotton and very future friendly. There is hardly a week that doesn't go by when I am asked at the grocery store where I got the bags and how I like them. Hopefully in the near future people will be forgoing the produce bags in Toronto as they have been the larger plastic bags for groceries and purchases. Gorilla Conservation Goes Pedal Powered!

Hi this is Sam at the Gorilla Organization’s Ugandan resource centre. The last couple of weeks have been very exciting for us. We have launched a brand new gorilla consrervation project in Western Uganda – Africa’s very first pedal powered cinema for conservation! This innovative cinema will be showing educational conservation films to school children and communities in some of the most rural villages on the edge of Mgahinga National Park. Prior to the launch of this project, many of the children, and even their teachers, had never seen a film before – and many had never seen images of gorillas.

Here is a photo of the pedal-powered cinema in action. The viewers take it in turns to pedal the bike, which generates enough energy to power the film!

Madeline Westwood, the director of the Great Apes Film initiative, who is partnering with the Gorilla Organization on this project, and Colin Tonks, the “wonder technician” and inventor of the cinema, came to Uganda from the UK to set this project running.

The first film showings were amazing – at one screening as many as 800 children came along to enjoy the Gorilla Organization’s film. And they were so excited – it was wonderful to see. The bike adds an extra element of audience participation to the screenings and children where queuing up to do some pedaling and power the film!

The children were amazed at what they saw. Some were so interested in the gorillas, and are now so desperate to protect them that they wanted us to make sure that their parents could watch the film too – I have no doubt that each and every one of them went home to tell their families about what they had seen. This is a huge step for gorilla conservation – the more local people who what to protect the gorillas, the more likely the gorillas are to survive long into the future.

As well as providing invaluable conservation education, the bikes provide an entirely clean source of power. No petrol is needed, no electricity is needed and as a result there is no negative environmental impact of showing these films.

Conservation education is now reaching remote communities, villages with no electricity and a whole host of others who have never before been able to see films or access this type of education – for this we are extremely proud. In the three weeks that the project has been running 11,600 school children, 184 teachers, 110 soldiers and 46 park rangers, all living around the Ugandan gorilla habitats, have seen the films – wow!
